Facts About 2D Gel Electrophoresis

Water Makes the Difference
Ultrapure water improves results in 2D gel electrophoresis

Nonetheless, to ensure highest reproducibility of 2D results, the quality of the electrophoresis products is also essential. Therefore, the main materials used in this study were supplied by SERVA Electrophoresis GmbH.

Please find some examples below:

  • The 1dimension was performed using SERVA IPG BlueStrips (pH  4 - 7, 11 cm).
  • SERVA 2D HPE™ Large Gels 12.5 % and the HPE™ BlueHorizon™ system were used for the 2dimension.

2D Principle 4.png

In laboratory practice, it is often common to store ultrapure water in supply tanks or to use commercially available ultrapure water from glass bottles that may have been opened some time ago.

Laboratory tests revealed that ultrapure water that has been left to stand in an open bottle has a much higher TOC (total organic carbon) and higher conductivity than does freshly dispensed ultrapure water. This is probably caused, inter alia, by transfer of volatile organic compounds and COfrom air into the water.
